Zone will deter bogus callers, say police

Rogue traders and bogus builders beware.

That is the message from Maidstone and District Neighbourhood Watch Association who have set up a new cold calling zone in Broadoak Avenue, Maidstone.

This is newest area to adopt the scheme to help householders protect themselves from potential doorstep conmen who could commit burglary through distraction.

Advice leaflets have been handed out to both householders and traders in the area and signs have been put up as a warning to bogus callers.

Lorraine Hemphrey, Neighbourhood Watch liaison officer said: “It is now well established that bogus burglars and rogue traders are often linked. These control zones are part of the Neighbourhood Watch, Trading Standards and the police's joint partnership to make the Maidstone area a safer place and stamp out this type of crime, which can have a devastating effect on elderly or vulnerable victims."

The newest zone is officially launched on Thursday, April 23, with afternoon tea and a brief talk on how they can help local residents.

Traders will be made aware of their obligations of registering themselves in accordance with the National Cold Calling protocol when making door-to-door visits.
