Steve Watt isn’t surprised by the volume of interest in the Maidstone manager’s job.
The club received more than 50 applications and started interviewing yesterday (Wednesday).
Watt is set to remain in caretaker charge for Saturday’s National League trip to Salford but that could be his final game unless he’s given the job permanently.
He hasn’t formally applied but is under consideration as United work towards appointing Jay Saunders’ successor.
Watt said: "It's a fantastic club, fantastically supported by the fans, and it's a great job that anyone would want.
"Whoever gets it will be a lucky man but they've also got big boots to fill after what Jay's done here, so it's also a tough job.
"It'll be interesting to see what happens but I'll just keep taking each day as it comes and be in contact with the owners and see what their ideas are moving forward.”
High-profile names such as Sol Campbell and Joe Kinnear have been linked and Watt said: “It's mad but getting a job in football isn't easy, at any level.
"So when jobs become available, particularly an attractive one like this, you'll find a lot of people will put their name in the hat.
"It's a tricky situation and decision for the owners to make.
"I'm sure they'll make it quick and not drag it out too long, so the club can start addressing the issues they need to on the pitch and start moving forward positively.”
Watt knows what he would do with the squad should he and interim assistant Craig Brewster be given the nod to carry on.
He said: “I think every manager would look at it differently.
“You can see where the squad's short and where it needs help and needs more bodies.
"I know what I would like to do to the squad.
"It's nothing different than if I was still on Jay's shoulder and what I would be saying to him about what I think we need to add.
"In terms of that I've had an opinion for many games now, it's not something I've just started to think about.
"It's something I've said three, four, five games ago.
"It's a difficult situation for the club bringing people in when you're not sure who's going to be the manager.
"I'm sure the club will move on it swiftly so we can start moving forward."
