Ahwan fires Stones into play-off mix

Cray Wanderers 1 Maidstone United 2

ERRISON AHWAN'S 82nd minute header gave Maidstone a deserved 2-1 victory at Cray on Tuesday night, placing the Stones firmly in contention for a Ryman League Division 1 South play-off place.

The Stones had the better of the first half, but found themselves trailing to a 62nd-minute goal by Ross Lover.

Mario McNish appeared to be fouled in the build-up on the edge of the penalty area, but the referee instead penalised McNish.

While Stones keeper Pat Mullin was still arranging his wall, Lover cleverly curled his his free-kick into a gaping net.

Ten minutes later it was Cray’s turn to curse the officials as Lynden Rowland pushed keeper Steve Northwood before heading in Craig Roser’s cross for the equaliser.

The goal stood and with eight minutes left Aaron Lacy’s cross was glanced in at the far post by Ahwan and Mullin then produced a brilliant one-handed save to deny Gary Abbott, leaving Maidstone sixth in the table with at least three games in hand on every side above them.
