A fast-paced final saw Darlington take the lead but Ruby Drew equalised and goalkeeper Lyla Geeves made a number of fine saves to take the game to spot-kicks.

Geeves was at it again in the shoot-out, saving Darlington’s first effort, while May Jones scored the winner for Maidstone after successful kicks from Drew and Jemimah Couchman.

Earlier in the day, the girls recorded 1-0 wins over Solihull and Hereford - Drew settling both games - and she also struck, along with Jones, in a 2-2 draw against a Darlington team they would meet again in the final.

They drew 0-0 with Chester, while their only defeat in the group stage was a 1-0 loss against Dagenham.

Team manager Lewis Jackson said: “I am so unbelievably proud of these girls and what they have achieved.”

Ben MacDonald and Max MacDonald, from Maidstone’s academy, also coached the team.

Squad: Lyla Geeves, Sephina Lowe, Jemimah Couchman, May Jones, Ruby Drew, Freya Jarvis, Ella Marshall, Lauren Mcquillan and Luci Griffin.
