Matt Bentley is getting into the swing of things following his move to Maidstone.

United have won all four games since forward Bentley’s arrival at the Gallagher Stadium.

The 25-year-old is yet to score but he’s confident that will soon change as he gets up to speed.

He hadn’t played competitively since October after returning to the UK from America.

Bentley made substitute appearances in 2-0 National League South wins over Chelmsford and Dartford.

He went on to start the Kent Senior Cup semi-final victory at Dartford, a tie the Stones won on penalties.

A first league start followed as George Elokobi’s men beat Weston 1-0 at the Gallagher on Saturday.

“Hopefully we can keep this run going,” said Bentley.

“It’s a busy period over Easter with Eastbourne away on Good Friday, Welling at home on Monday and then we go to Taunton on Wednesday.

“I hadn’t played since October so I’m just getting into things now.

“I’ve just got to get that first goal and the rest will come flowing.

“As long as I’m getting in the positions, the goals will come.”

Bentley joined Maidstone after a spell training with the club.

He’s initially on board until the end of the season but knows a successful stint could lead to more.

“I enjoyed coming in training,” said Bentley.

“The gaffer and the boys made me feel welcome.

“When I first came in they were preparing for the Coventry game in the FA Cup, so I was trying to impress but also trying to help them get ready for that.

“As I was training I felt more comfortable. it made sense to have a chat with the gaffer and come in for the final bit of the season and try and help the guys get promotion.

“You’ve always got to be confident when you go into a club.

“I’m quite a confident person in general and you’ve got to feel like you’re good enough, otherwise you wouldn’t be invited in the first place.

“Who knows what the future holds but I’m enjoying myself here.

“Hopefully I can stay here and see what happens next season.”

Bentley initially moved to America in 2016, playing college football while studying for an economics degree.

He made the MLS draft, although wasn’t selected, and returned to England during the Covid years, including a spell at Dover.

The forward was back in the States in 2022 after earning a professional deal with Richmond Kickers.

“I always thought education was important and I wanted a degree, as well as playing football,” said Bentley.

“In America, you get the chance to play football at a very high level while studying and fortunately I got a scholarship so everything was paid for.

“I got my degree, debt-free, and got to play football, so it worked out well.

“I hope when my career ends - which is maybe 40 nowadays - I can use my degree in economics, either in football or outside of football.”
