Maidstone midfielder Bivesh Gurung puts team glory above his individual FA Cup heroics this season.

Gurung had his day in the sun with a sensational winner against Barrow in the second round before Christmas.

His 25-yard strike was voted goal of the round and saw him make TV and back-page headlines.

But all that was overshadowed by Maidstone’s achievement in beating Championship side Ipswich in round four on Saturday.

Gurung, introduced shortly after the hour mark, was on the pitch when Sam Corne scored the winner in a 2-1 victory in front of 28,000 fans at Portman Road.

“It’s the best moment of my career,” said Gurung.

“Just to play at a big ground like that, in front of that many people, it’s what you dream about as a little kid.

“It definitely beats the Barrow goal.

“For me, it’s always about the team doing well first.

“The Barrow game is up there but the Ipswich game is on a much larger scale.

“It’s just little things, being on TV, playing in front of that crowd, and also with our own support as well.

“Bringing 4,500, when you see that, you just feel humbled and really privileged to play for a club that’s got such great backing.”

Gurung, 22, missed Maidstone’s third-round win over Stevenage through suspension so it meant a lot to get on at Ipswich.

Boss George Elokobi also introduced fellow homegrown players Perri Iandolo, 20, and Riley Court, 17.

“It’s a massive game and the gaffer showed he’s willing to give young players opportunities,” said Gurung.

“That’s all you want. You want a manager who believes in you and gives you a chance and he’s definitely willing to do that.

“I thought I’d get on. I could have potentially started as well but it wasn’t to be.

“I looked at the game and tried to have the right mindset coming into it, however many minutes I played.”

As a defensive midfielder, Gurung loves a battle and he wasn’t disappointed as Ipswich laid siege to the Maidstone goal.

“They were really knocking on the door,” he said.

“They asked us a lot of questions and we just had to stay resolute as a team and keep working hard for each other.

“It showed with that goalmouth scramble we had that everyone was willing to put their bodies on the line for the team.

“It was a massive day for the club, a historic win and we’re really proud of how we went about our business. I’m sure everyone will remember that day for the rest of their lives.”

Maidstone face Championship opposition again in round five with a trip to Sheffield Wednesday or Coventry at the end of February.

Having beaten high-flying Ipswich, neither side hold any fear.

Gurung, who watched Sunday’s draw with supporters at the Gallagher Stadium, said: “Like we have done this whole competition, we fancy ourselves. It’s going to be no different.

“We’re going to go about our business the same way we have and let’s hope we can cause another upset.

“There was a lot of excitement watching the draw and a few nerves. It was good fun being around the fans as well. You can see how much it means to everyone.”
