A MAIDSTONE & District League football team has pulled out of the league after its players ran amok through the village of Kingswood.

The match between Kingswood and Capel Sports last Saturday was abandoned after some 50 minutes when fighting erupted.

Several players were sent off and one of Kingswood’s players, a Kosovo Albanian, was allegedly chased by several Capel players outside the ground.

Managers of both teams looked on in horror as the fighting erupted. A corner flag was allegedly aimed like a javelin at another player and one player picked up a long piece of wood to defend himself.

Capel Sports & Social Club Secretary Melvyn Jenner said he was horrified at the behaviour of the team. Capel have run Sunday teams in the West Kent leagues for several years with a previously excellent disciplinary record.

The Saturday team is made up of players from the Maidstone area. “We have withdrawn the team from the league,” he said.

Maidstone League Chairman Ted Towner announced that members of the league committee would make a decision shortly about what would happen to Capel’s points.
