MAIDSTONE United's adventure in this year's FA Cup came to end at the second qualifying round stage as they lost to Ryman League Premier Division outfit Boreham Wood at home on Saturday.

In front of a record crowd of 937, the Stones were hoping for a cup upset, but it always looked a tall order after the visitors scored within 10 minutes as Jeran Meah netted from close range following a long throw.

To their credit, Jim Ward's side equalised two minutes later when Paul Ribbens' cross-shot was deflected into the goal off a defender's leg.

Boreham didn't have to wait too long to regain their one-goal advantage as Gary Dixon scored with a precise chip from the edge of the box on 18 minutes after good work from Scott Forrester.

Home goalkeeper Kevin Hudson made a couple of excellent saves before the visitors doubled their lead 10 minutes before the interval when Garry Wotton flicked header was bundled over the line from close range by Dixon.

Maidstone's Paul Foley saw a header crash against the cross bar as the hosts ended the half on top and they carried the momentum on into the second period as Steve Butler scored from the penalty spot after a foul on Adrian Webster.

But, once again, Boreham weathered the storm and regained their two-goal lead on 62 minutes with a soft goal as Scott Forrester tapped the ball into the vacant net after Hudson had dropped a cross at the striker's feet.

The goal seemed to knock the stuffing out of the home team and it was little surprise when Forrester made it 5-2 with a neat finish three minutes from time.
