Maidstone gymnast James Hall has been named in the Great Britain squad for the World Championships.

But there is no place for Pegasus clubmate Courtney Tulloch, who has been overlooked for the competition in Doha which runs from October 25 to November 3.

Hall has the chance to help his country reach the 2020 Olympics as the top three nations automatically qualify for Tokyo.

That explains rings star Tulloch's absence with GB selectors picking all-around gymnasts over specialists in pursuit of team success.

Hall is happy to be in the squad but says it will feel strange without Tulloch.

He said: "It's my fifth major championship in a row so I'm really quite pleased with that and excited to start the next campaign.

"With this new structure for Olympic qualification it's a tough call.

"For someone like Courtney, he doesn't do all-around so his route's not so straightforward.

"They've changed it so if you're a specialist you've got the option to go through the World Cup and perhaps miss the World Championships.

"It will be strange without him. He's been to every major I've been to.

"It will be a little different but I know he'll be supporting us from back home and we'll keep in touch.

"It's definitely not the end of the world for Courtney.

"He's got bigger fish to fry at the moment. He's still doing an incredible job and he's valued team member."

Hall is a five-man team alongside Dom Cunningham, Max Whitlock, Joe Fraser and Nile Wilson.

He said: "The team event is our priority.

"We could send individual specialists to the Worlds to make up a team but I don't think it would be the strongest option.

"This year we can definitely come top five and potentially push for a medal.

"We had a trial last weekend and for me it was my usual performance, but slightly elevated, so I was really pleased.

"It felt like a big step forward for my career."
