It wasn’t a day for rollickings after Maidstone’s 3-1 defeat at Woking.

There’s been some lengthy dressing-room inquests after away losses this season.

But there was little wrong with the Stones’ performance at Kingfield on Saturday, where Sam Corne gave them a half-time lead.

Woking hit back to go third in the National League, while it was just a second defeat in seven games for Maidstone.

The Stones stay 20th, their cushion over the bottom four reduced to three points after Torquay won at Dagenham.

“I thought we did very well today,” said assistant manager Terry Harris.

“Certainly, first 45 minutes, we’ve come in 1-0 up and I thought deservedly so.

“Second half, we’ve had four good chances but, at the end of the day, I thought we dropped a little bit deeper.

“They’re decent going forward and I thought we dropped a little bit deeper and they started to find the little pockets and hurt us.

“It was frustrating, disappointing.

“It’s small margins, it really is. I thought, certainly first half, we won most of the challenges, most of the balls, but they’re a decent side, make no mistake about it, but I thought we handled that well.

“It’s all about building blocks one step at a time, so we’ve got to go back to work now on Tuesday and get ready for Altrincham next week and the Christmas period.

“We have to take the positives, everything can’t be negative.

"We have to take the positive things. Let’s start again now and hopefully we can go another four, five, six-game run as well.”

Maidstone lost goalkeeper Ryan Sandford to a dislocated shoulder shortly before half-time.

He was clattered at a corner, with his shoulder popping back in as he rolled on to his back after landing.

The on-loan Millwall man will have a scan to assess the damage.

Replacement Yusuf Mersin conceded three times in the second half but there was no blame attached.

“Losing Ryan wasn’t the reason we got beat but it was disappointing,” said Harris.

“I’m certainly not blaming Yusuf for any of the goals really but we just started to drop a little bit deeper as a team and they capitalised.”
