Hero Lee Worgan had no idea his penalty save from Danny Kedwell had sent Maidstone into the National League.

Captain Worgan was so engrossed in the play-off final shoot-out he only realised United had won when he saw the reaction of team-mates.

The Stones No.1, who also saved from Tom Bonner, revealed how reserve keeper Will Godmon convinced him Kedwell would put his spot-kick down the middle.

Worgan said: “I had a chat with Will and he said with Kedwell’s penalty maybe I should just stand and I said yes because I thought he was going to put his foot through it.

“He deserves credit. He’s a good friend of mine. He needs that sort of credit because he’s put the seed in my head.

“I’ll be honest, as he stepped up I thought I’d save it. I’ve managed to get a strong hand and, yes, I did it.

“I’ve had to make the save but it’s a squad game, we’ve been a good squad all season and I honestly couldn’t be more proud of the boys, I love them to bits, and the supporters as well.

“I can’t believe it. I didn’t even know that save had won it. All I was concentrating on was each penalty.

"I’ve saved it and seen the boys running and that’s when I’ve taken off and tried to get away to celebrate with our fans. I don’t know whether to laugh or cry. I’m elated.”
