George Elokobi hasn’t forgotten Weymouth’s big gesture during Maidstone’s FA Cup run.

United host the Terras at the Gallagher tonight (7.45pm) in a rearranged National League South match.

The sides were due to meet on February 24, just two days before Maidstone travelled to Coventry in the FA Cup fifth round.

But Weymouth agreed to postpone the fixture to give the Stones a break before the biggest night in their history.

The Dorset club have changed their manager since then, with Bobby Wilkinson replaced by Mark Molseley.

But Elokobi hopes to bump into chairman Paul Maitland to express his gratitude for their assistance.

“It was a fantastic gesture,” said Stones boss Elokobi.

“We needed that little break going into the Coventry game and Weymouth showed the community spirit that exists at National League South level and we respect that.

“I reached out at the time to the former manager, Bobby, and thanked him on behalf of myself and the football club and it’s important we acknowledge that again.

“I’m on board with that because football is for all and it’s important we help one another in times of need.

“That was our time of need and they helped us out.

“If I see their chairman or their chief executive, whoever is at the game, I will shake their hand and thank them personally. It would be nice to do that.

“A massive thank-you to Weymouth for what they did for us back then.”

Maidstone secured a play-off spot with Saturday’s victory at Farnborough.

That was the objective at the start of the season and one they’ve accomplished despite balancing FA Cup commitments for a large chunk of the campaign.

But there’s still plenty to play for in the final three games as Maidstone bid to finish second or third and book a home semi-final.

They’ll move up to third tonight if they better Braintree’s result against Taunton, with the sides locked on 77 points.

“We set ourselves a target in the off-season and we knew 75-76 points would get us in the play-offs,” said Elokobi.

“We looked at that and how we wanted to go about it.

“We’ve dominated lots of games and got points when we needed.

“It was important after the distraction of the FA Cup - a fine distraction - that we gave our fans something to cheer about in the league and that meant making sure we finished in the play-offs.

“Every player has been terrific in terms of driving standards and meeting objectives.

“It’s important we look at how far we’ve come but also not be satisfied with that because there’s still plenty of work to be done.

“There’s nine points to play for and we want to pick up those nine points.”

Club captain Gavin Hoyte, who’s been out injured since the Coventry tie, joined in the warm-up at Farnborough.

That’s raised hopes he could feature again this season, although he needs to be right.

“With Gavin’s situation, it’s going to be difficult,” said Elokobi on Saturday evening.

“We don’t push any player to come back too early but also he has to force his way back into the team.

“He hasn’t trained yet and when he does we need to make sure he’s firing on all cylinders, and then we go from there.

“Hopefully we see him before the end of the season but it all boils down to how he’s reintegrated back into training.

“Hopefully there’s no reaction.”
