Confidence is flowing through the Maidstone United squad after extending their winning run.

The Stones won 2-0 at Torquay on Saturday to reach the First Round of the FA Cup for the first time in four years.

And on Tuesday night they beat old rivals Gillingham by the same scoreline to seal a Kent Senior Cup Quarter-Final spot.

George Elokobi’s side have won their last seven games in all competitions, conceding only one goal in the process.

They bid to make it eight when they return to National League South action at home to Farnborough this Saturday (3pm).

That’s followed by Welling away on Tuesday (7.45pm).

“The boys have always been confident,” said Elokobi.

“From the moment we built this squad in pre-season, they’ve worked extremely hard.

“We know the squad isn’t the biggest and it’s good to see everyone’s had a taste of it in terms of minutes played.

“Everyone’s been part of it and in training everyone is included.

“We just try to educate as best we can in terms of how we want to play, in the principles we deploy.

“It’s an ongoing development and there’s still plenty more to come from our group but confidence is a good thing.

“They adhere to high standards, on and off the pitch, and they look after each other and make sure they hold each other accountable if things aren’t being done right.

“They’re a close-knit group in the changing room so they’ve got that bond going on.

“We’ve seen on the pitch, they’re not just playing for themselves and their team-mates, they’re playing for the football club, the badge and their families.

“It’s in their DNA to want to do well, so long may the good times last, but again we understand nothing is achieved in October.

“We have to take it one game and one training session at a time, look after the group and make sure we are prepared for whatever opposition is in front of us.”

Maidstone are fourth in National League South, two points behind leaders Yeovil, while weekend opponents Farnborough are 10th.

The Stones have played seven of their 11 league matches away, making their start to the campaign all the more impressive.

It’s four weeks since their last Saturday home game, a 4-0 win over Worthing.

“It’s been a while,” said Elokobi.

“We’d have loved more games played in front of our home crowd but the fixtures have been done the way they’ve been done and it’s not a problem.

“We approach every game as it comes and, home or away, we try to be as professional as we can be in terms of our preparation and execution.

“But it’s good to be back in front of our home crowd and hopefully we send them home with a positive result.”

Maidstone have been drawn away to Chesham in the FA Cup First Round after the Southern League side beat Braintree 3-1 in a replay on Tuesday night.

They last met in the competition in 1979, with Chesham running out 3-1 winners in the Fourth Qualifying Round.

Either side of that, the Stones reached the Third Round Proper, losing 2-1 to Charlton in a replay in 1978 and 4-2 against Exeter in 1980, having knocked out Gillingham after a Second-Round trilogy.
