The Mini World Cup at Maidstone’s Gallagher Stadium was a huge success.

Morocco, represented by the Discovery School in West Malling, lifted the trophy.

They beat Spain, represented by Loose Primary School, 3-0 in the final.

The tournament, opened by Mayor of Maidstone Cllr Derek Mortimer, attracted 360 youngsters from 36 schools, while the main stand was packed with parents.

It was organised by the Stones Community Trust, whose chairman Mike Littleboy said: “We thank all the 36 teams, teachers, academy and sixth-form student helpers and volunteers.

“In our view, it was one of the best events we’ve seen at the Gallagher.

“In the 10th anniversary year of the Gallagher Stadium’s opening, this event reminds us how important this stadium is to the local community and the next generation, whether they go on to play here for one of our teams or join their family on the terraces.”

The Discovery School will go forward to represent Maidstone United at the National League regional finals early next year.

They will also be treated to five free coaching sessions, along with a Stones kit.

There was an educational side to the Mini World Cup, with children researching the country they were representing.

The winners of the Know Your Country Award were Lenham Primary, representing Argentina.

Months of planning went into the day, with Littleboy adding: “We couldn’t have staged the tournament without the support of our main sponsors CSIS, the National League Trust and Wellbeing People.

“Thanks also to the KM Group and Europa Sports for their support.

“It was a pleasure to welcome Spencer Barden from CSIS and Susan O’Brien from the National League Trust.

“We also extend our warm thanks to the mayor, who gave up his time to open the event and stayed throughout the day, encouraging the teams and presenting awards and medals to all players.”

The Stones Community Trust are set to hold a Mini World Cup for girls next year to coincide with the Women’s World Cup, which takes place in Australia and New Zealand in July.
