Jay Saunders has called on Jack Paxman to start influencing games further up the pitch again.

Paxman's inclusion in central midfield coincided with a nine-game winning streak as United flew up National South and reached the first round of the FA Cup.

But boss Saunders feels his form has dipped and left him out in favour of Alex Brown for the FA Trophy defeat by Bognor at the weekend.

Saunders said: "I feel he has a habit of just dropping deep all the time and trying to get it off centre-halves' toes and he’s not effective there.

"We need him higher up the pitch, hence why we brought Browny in because I thought he’d have more of an effect on the front foot.

"He’s one of them that wants the ball wherever it is and unfortunately that means he goes and gets it off centre-halves’ toes.

"I keep saying to him we need him to have an impact higher up the pitch and if he’s going to play that deep myself and Nicky Southall (assistant boss) might as well sit in there.

"He knows that, he knows what we want him to do but he’s a young lad who’s having his first full season in non-league football and he’s just got to learn."
