Two more wins will see Maidstone Rugby Club at Twickenham for the Intermediate Cup final.

And with promotion to London 1 South on the cards, it could be Maidstone’s last chance to play at the home of rugby for a long time.

Coach Paul Hathaway said: "There are only a few leagues with cup competitions that allow you to progress to Twickenham.

"It would be nice to do it this year as, if we go up, that door closes.

"First and foremost, we’ve got two league games coming up – Colfeians and Beckenham – and if we win them, the title is more or less ours.

"If we get those wins, it gives us an opportunity to manage the players.

"We’ve had a tough five weeks in terms of physical games which is beginning to tell.

"The reality is we have a group of players and they have to understand that we will rotate where we can."

Maidstone set up a regional final against Chiswick after a 33-7 success at Diss last weekend. The winners go through to the national semi-finals.

Hathaway said: "It was our most mature performance of the season.

"Diss were a well-organised pack, very physical and they posed different challenges to those we’ve faced in league games.

"It challenged our players’ thinking on the pitch and they adapted well. We like to concentrate on our own game and strengths.

"It’s about adapting on the day and we did that."

Skipper Ben Williams went off with an ankle injury and could be rested when London 2 South East leaders Maidstone go to Old Colfeians tomorrow (Saturday).

Maidstone coped well without their talisman, who has impressed his coach all season.

Hathaway said: "Ben’s a good captain who works hard on and off the pitch.

"I like a lot of things about him but you can always move forward and develop and he’s going from strength to strength, both as a player and in his tactical decision-making."
