Jay May is back with Maidstone after a prolific month at Hastings.

May scored seven goals in a loan spell with the Ryman League Division 1 South club. He got his first taste of National League football as a substitute against Bromley on Tuesday and feels sharp having suffered a calf problem in pre-season.

He returned to the side in difficult circumstances, with Maidstone struggling to get into the game. But, at 30, he’s just glad to get his chance in the top flight of non-league and has been impressed by United’s start which has them 13th after nine matches.

May said: “It was a strange game to come back into. Bromley’s my old club as well but it’s good to be back. I was looking forward to getting back and was pleased to get on, although the result didn’t go our way.

“The boys have done well so far and if you’d said at the start of the season we’d be where we are and picking up the points we have, everyone would have taken that.”

He’s setting no goal targets in the National League but, based on the Bromley match, the big targetman hopes the physical side of his game will be allowed to flourish.

He said: “To be honest, I’ve not seen loads of the games. I watched Wrexham here and I thought we were good and I watched the first game here against York City and again I thought we did enough to get the result but ended up drawing.

“Bromley was the first game I’ve played in and I thought the referee was pretty good. He let it flow.

“I don’t know at the minute what it will be like but it’s probably more physical anyway so you probably do get away with a little bit more. As for goals, who knows? I wouldn’t like to set a target.

“I’ll just be happy to be involved and be part of the squad.”
