Maidstone United defender Luke Pennell has left the club by mutual consent.

Pennell played only 10 times for the Stones after joining from Dagenham last summer.

He started the season at left-back before picking up a shoulder injury and was unable to hold down a regular spot in his favoured position at centre-half.

The low point of his time at the Gallagher came when he was substituted in a game against St Albans, accused of "taking the p***" and "trying to "play like Bobby Moore".

But there were a few highs, too, notably his outstanding display in Maidstone's FA Cup first-round victory over Torquay.

He was still highly thought of by the Stones management, with head of football John Still describing him as a "Rolls Royce" centre-half.

Still said: “I know Penns well, having brought him to Dagenham a few years ago.

“I also know what he’s capable of and this is one of those where it’s not worked out as either of us had hoped.

“I wish him nothing but success and he’s definitely one I’ll keep an eye on in the months and years to come.”
