Johl Powell wants to stay at Maidstone for the rest of the season and help them win the league.

Midfielder Powell is two weeks into a one-month loan from Charlton but already hopes to extend his spell at the Gallagher.

He enjoyed a sparkling debut as the Stones came from two goals down to beat Hungerford 3-2 on Saturday and came off the bench in the 1-0 win over Braintree on Tuesday night.

Powell has played Football League Trophy matches for Charlton’s first team but the cut and thrust of a National South promotion fight will only help his development.

He said: “The loan is a month to start with but hopefully I can get it extended to the end of the season - and hopefully we can win the league.

“The first loan is always going to be special because it’s the first taste of proper men’s football.

“It’s a massive club, I can see that coming in every day, it’s so good.

“I’ve spoken to some of the staff here, they’ve said about the history of the club and this club belongs in the Football League. Hopefully they can get back there.”

Charlton enjoy a big reputation for producing young players and in Powell they have another talent on their hands.

They felt he was ready to go out on loan and Maidstone were the ideal destination for the midfielder.

“I’m really enjoying it,” said Powell.

“Saturday was really good, to get my first start, and the manner we won in was just unbelievable.

“Tuesday was a tough game to come on but I thought I did all right and the boys dug deep to get a result and it’s another massive three points.

“It’s my first loan and we’d been planning it for a while.

“This season they wanted me to come out and get games.

“Nothing materialised earlier on in the season and then I was playing 23s football at Charlton, doing well, and Maidstone came to watch me a couple of times.

“There’s quite a few boys coming through at the moment.

“It’s always been like that at Charlton, the pathway is good and boys come through and do well.

“I’ve had a few first-team games but it was time for me to come out on loan and play more games at men’s level.

“It’s slightly different. At that level it’s a bit more technical and at this level probably more physical.

“But a team like Maidstone, we’ve got good technical players and that’s why I decided to come here because I know I can still play, as well as do the physical side of it.”

Powell has been joined at the Gallagher by Charlton team-mate Hady Ghandour, who has returned for a second loan spell.

"It's great having Hady here," said Powell. "Having him back in the building has helped me settle."
