Maidstone United chief exec Bill Williams has urged fellow clubs to vote the season over.

The National League have recommended ending the season immediately and have asked clubs to vote on the issue.

Williams, writing on the club’s website at the weekend, hopes clubs would back the proposal, putting health before football.

Stones’ co-owner Oliver Ash has already said they want the season ended now so that they can plan ahead for next season.

Dover Athletic chairman Jim Parmenter said last month they had ran out of money.

Many non-league teams, including Maidstone, won’t have a squad from the end of this month as player contracts expire at the end of April.

Williams said: “We see no option other than to end the season now and do our best to steady ourselves for the next one, although that may still be many months away.

“Unlike the professional game, which is still predominantly cash rich, despite some eyebrow-raising furloughing, most clubs at our level haven’t had any income for six or more weeks and have most of their players out of contract in a fortnight.

“It would be highly risky for our clubs to commit to anything contractual while the uncertainty over when and how next season might happen sits over us.

“Hopefully those who haven’t voted and are dragging their heels will take a moment to remind themselves that the suffering of more than of 14,000 men and women, their family and friends ranks higher than their league placing and an etching on a piece of silverware.”

The Premier League and the EFL have halted the season indefinitely but lower-league football below the National League structure has been scrapped.

National League clubs are set to vote on how the season should be concluded, if it is ended immediately.

Teams could be in favour of promotion and relegation.

On points per game Ebbsfleet United would finish third from bottom, dropping below Maidenhead, potentially relegating them to National League South.
