Maidstone boss John Still would be reluctant to let Dan Wishart leave after his flying start to the campaign.

Defender Wishart has excelled in a new role on the left wing since breaking back into the side.

He scored twice in United’s sparkling 4-1 win over Chelmsford yesterday and if he maintains his form there could be fresh interest in a player who was transfer-listed after telling the club he wanted to stay at National League level.

Head of football Still said: “This is one of the things that’s really difficult because when the end of the season came, Wish wanted to try and stay higher, which I understand, so we went out and got two players.

“Through injury, he’s played in a slightly different position and he’s contributing, so that’s fantastic. Well done, Wish.”

Asked if he would now want Wishart to stay, should there be an approach, Still added: “It’s not a question I’ve got to answer. Let’s see how things work out.

“We’re happy with Wish, we haven’t got any problems.

“Would we let him go now? Probably not. Our squad’s not the biggest, it’s not that strong.”

Victory over Chelmsford made it five games unbeaten as Maidstone moved up to eighth in National League South.

Still said: “I just think we’re improving all the time.

“We were disappointed for them to be level at half-time but second half I thought we were outstanding.

“We moved the ball well, our mixture of game was good, we were long, we were short, our finishing was good and we’re getting better all the time.

“We’ve just got to keep going, trying to find a key to games because all games are different.

“We’re a hardworking side but we have to find the key to unlock games and we found it today by moving the ball very quickly in the second half.

“I actually think we’re a little way away from what we could be, I do, but I also feel that winning breeds confidence and we are getting more confident as a team.

“People are getting more confident with their jobs.”

It was Maidstone’s second victory in three days, following Saturday’s success at Concord, and the crowd were buzzing after a first home win since beating Barnet in early April.

Still said: “The support, as I know from my old days, has always been fantastic.

“That was a part of why I came back because when you get a well-supported club I think you can get momentum if you get behind your team.

“I found it at Bristol Rovers and at Luton, they get behind the team, and it carries you through sometimes.”
