Maidstone's Luke Savill ran into an opponent in top form as he had to settle for silver in the under-21 men’s singles at the PG Mutual National Championships.

Savill got through the early rounds with few alarms to take his place in the gold medal match against England international Tom Jarvis.

But it was one-way traffic as Jarvis took the title 4-0 (11-4, 11-5, 11-7, 11-7).

Savill praised his opponent, saying: “I’ve got to say I’m happy to reach the final. It was a good performance from me today but the final was a bit tough – well played Tom.”

In the senior men’s singles, 19-year-old Savill reached the quarter-finals with a good 4-2 (8-11, 11-7, 11-7, 11-7, 5-11, 11-5) victory over Gaurav Aravind. He next played top seed and world No.17 Liam Pitchford, who wasted little time in clinching a 4-0 (11-6, 11-3, 11-1, 11-9) victory.

Savill went one better in the men’s doubles, partnering Alim Hirji to a semi-final place, where they were beaten 3-0 (11-5, 11-5, 11-5) by Commonwealth Games medallists Sam Walker and David McBeath.
