Maidstone are 10 points clear in the title race after Jay May's double secured a 2-1 win over Lewes.

May scored in either half before Lewes replied, with Stones extending their lead at the top of the Ryman League Premier Division after Matgate were held at Canvey.

United always looked comfortable against a Lewes side who came to keep things tight.

Stones almost took the lead inside five minutes, May's first-time effort going narrowly wide after a neat move involving Jack Parkinson, George Porter and Tom Mills.

Stones were in front on 27 minutes with May getting the final touch on the line after Shane Huke met Frannie Collin's free-kick.

May scored again from a Collin cross seven minutes into the second half and could have completed his hat-trick after rounding Rikki Banks on the hour but defenders got back and he rolled his effort wide.

In-form May went close again as the match opened up, then Collin hit the bar with a free-kick after a foul on Mills.

Lewes pulled a goal back through James Fraser's terrific 20-yard free-kick on 73 minutes.

Fraser bent another effort wide moments later as Lewes, having looked out of the game, threatened to level.

A fumble by Banks saw Stones work an opening for Billy Bricknell, whose effort was blocked, then Parkinson's strike flashed wide.

Parkinson should have put the game to bed in the last few minutes but didn't put enough on the ball after Jamie Coyle's header dropped in the six-yard box.

Maidstone: Worgan, Stone, Mills, Huke, Coyle, Rogers, Bricknell (Greenhalgh 90), Parkinson, May, Collin (Bodkin 81mins), Porter. Subs not used: Miles, Starkey, Godmon.
