Maidstone United boss Hakan Hayrettin has appointed his assistant manager.

The vastly-experienced Terry Harris was previously assistant boss at Dagenham but has worked with Hayrettin before.

The duo were together under John Still at Luton, where they won promotion out of the National League.

Harris told the club’s website: “I’ve worked with Hakan before so I know the way he works and what he wants.

“He spoke to me some while ago about coming here but with the Covid situation, everything was put on hold.

“I finished at Dagenham when I was no.2 to Peter Taylor. I stayed until the end of lockdown with Daryl McMahon but he’s got his own staff so my time there came to a close.

“We were successful at Luton when we got out of the National League. I know Hak very well, he is a good man. He wants to do well and progress in the game, and he has a feeling for the club as well.”

Maidstone’s players returned to pre-season training this week, with the National League season due to commence on Saturday, October 3. Although Stones will actually be in FA Cup action that day.

“I was pleasantly surprised (with the condition of the players),” said Harris. “I know some of the players – Scott Rendell, Gavin Hoyte, Chris Lewington. I saw Maidstone a few times last season so I’m aware of them.

“There’s nothing like being out on the training field. We need to adhere to the precautions that are set and ensure they look after themselves.

“Hopefully as pre-season progresses, we’ll come away from fitness and work more towards organisation so come October 3 we are ready to go.”

Harris added: “I’ve always had a soft spot for Maidstone. I’ve always looked from afar, and thought what a good club this looks.

“Hopefully we can get this club moving (forwards). I want to get out of this league and get into the National League and League 2 – that’s further down the line but that’s the aim.”
