Maidstone FA Cup hero Bivesh Gurung is living proof you should always listen to your mum.
Gurung’s 20-yard screamer gave the Stones a 2-1 second-round victory over League 2 Barrow at the Gallagher Stadium on Saturday.
The midfielder told after the game how mum Sanu has been telling him to shoot more often.
Her advice paid off, and then some, as Gurung fired his hometown club into the third round for the first time since a 1-0 defeat at Sheffield United in 1988.
The 22-year-old is better known for his defensive qualities, with his only previous goal for the club a header at Aldershot at the start of last season.
But he showed an eye for the spectacular as National League South Maidstone bridged a gap of 46 places to defeat the high-flying Cumbrians.
“I know I’m capable of doing that,” said Gurung, who came through the youth ranks at the Gallagher before a spell at Crystal Palace.
“I know I don’t show it enough and my mum, she also tells me to shoot more because she knows that I can do that, and mums are always right, so she’ll probably be taking the credit for that one.
“Going to bed last night I couldn’t have imagined it to be any better than that, to get the winning goal.
“I’m just really proud of the whole team performance.
“Everyone put in a massive shift for the team.
“Everyone dug deep and we gave them a proper game. We know we’re able to do that.
“If we play to the best of our ability, then we know we can give anyone a game.”
Gurung wasn’t supposed to be on the pitch by the time he scored Maidstone’s 74th-minute winner.
Nine minutes earlier his number went up to be substituted, only to stay on after team-mate Sol Wanjau-Smith went down injured.
He made the most of the reprieve with a stunning first-time strike into the top corner from Sam Bone’s lay-off.
“It was a bit of a weird feeling, to be honest,” said Gurung.
“But you respect the manager’s decision if I were to come off because everyone in the team is able to come on and do a job.
“But staying on the pitch I wanted to stamp my authority on the game and luckily I was able to do it at the end.
“Don’t get me wrong, it was a massive collective effort from the team - everyone defending for their lives, throwing their bodies at the ball, just doing anything, by all means, to keep it out of the net.”
Maidstone had added incentive to win the game after 20-goal top scorer Levi Amantchi was stretchered off before the break.
It was 1-1 at the time and United were desperate to win the game for their injured team-mate.
“I’m gutted for Levi because he’s been so good for us,” said Gurung.
“He’s been influential and scored so many goals and we wanted to get the win for him as well.”
