Maidstone have signed striker Jonathan Edwards from FC Halifax Town.

Stones head of football John Still is a long-time admirer of the big forward who has signed a one-year deal at the Gallagher.

The Luton-born player, 22, was keen to return south after three years in Yorkshire, first with Hull and then the Shaymen.

That opened the door for Still, who first saw Edwards when he played for Peterborough.

Still said: “I liked his movement and I liked his work rate for a forward.

“I looked him up and he’d been at Stevenage and Peterborough.

“It didn’t work out for him at Peterborough and he had a bit of running around and ended up at Halifax.

“He came on as sub against us towards the end of last season when Halifax won 1-0.

“When I looked at the teamsheet, I thought ‘I like this boy’ and he came on and did all right.

“I just thought he’s a good age and he’s got really good attributes.

“He got a good move to Peterborough and that didn’t work out but he’s only 22 now and I just think sometimes these boys come again.

“He was desperate to get back home to the south, so I enquired and was able to get him.

“I’d done my homework on him because one of my ex-players was at Halifax and I also spoke to someone who knew him from when he was at Peterborough and they spoke well of him.

“He’s not scored as many goals as he would have liked but he said sometimes he might have played a touch wider than he would have liked.

“He’s a good size, 6ft 2in, he’s 22, he’s quick enough, he’s quite strong and there’s lots in him we can work with.

“The two people I spoke to never put me off.

“In fact they went the other way and said they both thought he definitely had something that if worked with could really push him on.

“I like a little gamble if I’m being honest.”

Edwards started his career at Stevenage before earning a pro deal at Posh.

He had loans with Bishop’s Stortford, Ilkeston and St Albans before joining Dunstable in 2016 but was soon on the move to Hull.

The Tigers loaned him out to Accrington and Woking, making his Cards debut in a 4-4 draw against Maidstone in 2018.

He joined Halifax last summer, scoring on his debut in a 2-0 win at Braintree, and now can’t wait to get going at Maidstone.

He said: “When I heard of the interest I knew it would be a great opportunity for me to kick on and get back down south to be nearer my family.

“I’ve always believed in my own abilities and attributes and having a manager like John Still is going to be good for me as you can’t ask for anyone with more experience in the game than him.

"I am happy and excited to be here, willing to learn and can’t wait to get started and scoring some goals!”
