Steve Watt had an uncomfortable flight home on Tuesday night – but it was nothing to do with turbulence.

The new Maidstone captain was on his way back from holiday while United were taking on Carshalton in their second match of the Ryman League, Premier Division season.

Watt, who is available for the trip to Hendon on Saturday after completing a two-match ban, said: “I was keeping an eye on Twitter for the score and Carshalton equalised just before we took off. I was on the edge of my seat on the way home. It wasn’t the most comfortable flight.

“We landed at 11.30pm and I found out we’d won. I had every faith in the team.”

Watt, 28, was made skipper at the Gallagher Stadium after Shaun Welford’s summer move to Hythe. The former Chelsea defender, who played under Jose Mourinho, is sure to put his stamp on the role.

He said: “It was a great honour to be asked to be captain. It’s always nice to be given the armband but we’re a good, tight bunch and I’m not the only leader in the dressing room.

“A few of the boys probably see me as an angry man and I can be when I need to be.

“I’ve always said a football team is like a family. There will be rows and disagreements but, no matter what happens, we all pull in the same direction.”
