Welling have boosted their threadbare squad by signing five new players on the opening day of the January transfer window.

The Wings are even hoping to add another new face before Sunday's trip to Forest Green Rovers in the Vanarama Conference.

They are the first signing for new boss Jody Brown, who took over from Jamie Day when the latter departed to join big-spending Ebbsfleet.

Welling have signed Rowan Vine, Josh Carmichael, Joseph Zerafa and Reece Harris while assistant boss Glen Little has also penned Conference forms to add experience to the squad.

Vine is the most high-profile of the newcomers, having gone for combined transfer fees of nearly £4million during a playing career that included QPR, Birmingham and Luton. He also had a spell on loan at Gillingham.

Carmichael joins on loan from AFC Bournemouth, Zerafa from Brown's former club, Grays, and Harris makes the step up from East Thurrock.

Maltese international Zerafa previously played in both Champions League and Europa League qualifiers after a successful career in Malta.

Brown said: “I’m pleased to bring Joe to Welling, he came to Grays while he was looking for something higher.

“He’s a full international and has accustomed himself to English football over recent months.”

And on the signing of Vine, Brown added: "I think the experience he adds to our young squad is invaluable.

“He also has that cutting edge around the final third that we have missed in my short time here so far.”

Goalkeeper Jonathan Henly has extended his loan spell from Reading but Benji Buchel's loan from Bournemouth has ended.

Welling travel to Forest Green, managed by former Wings boss Adrian Pennock, on Sunday.
