Maidstone has a new professional boxer – and he’s set his sights on winning a world title.

Chris Matthews will make his professional debut on the Boys are Back in Town show at Medway Park in Gillingham on Saturday, July 11.

The 20-year-old, who lives in Shepway, has signed a three-year deal with promoter Joe Elfidh and doesn’t plan on making up the numbers.

The super-featherweight said: “My aim is to win a world title – I’m serious about that. I don’t want to rush into anything but that’s the plan.

since I was nine and it seems like a good time to turn pro.”

Matthews, who boxed as an amateur for Westree, will start his pro career with a four-round contest.

An opponent is still to be confirmed but the former New Line Learning pupil is promising entertainment in front of his home crowd.

He said: “I like to have a good old scrap. I might have to change my approach depending on how the fight’s going but I’m a big puncher and enjoy a tear-up."

Tickets to the Boys are Back in Town show cost £35 or £55 at ringside and are available by calling 07511 680092.
