Maidstone United’s weekend opponents have apologised after reports their fans aimed abuse at a young mascot.
St Albans have released a statement condemning the actions of a “small minority” of travelling supporters.
It happened before Saturday’s National League South game at the Gallagher Stadium which ended in a 1-1 draw.
“We are very disappointed to learn that a small minority of the club’s away following at Maidstone United on Saturday afternoon chose to chant abuse towards a young mascot before the game,” said St Albans.
“We are in contact with Maidstone United to express our concern and to apologise for this unacceptable behaviour.
“A small minority not only tarnished the reputation of this club, on an afternoon where the majority of Saints fans offered a fantastic show of support but the whole of football and its communities in general.
“The club is investigating the incident, including reviewing video footage, and will take the necessary action against anyone identified as having been involved in any unacceptable and anti-social behaviour.
“If anyone has any further details regarding the incident, you can report this in confidence to: incidents@stalbanscityfc.com.”
The Stones won 3-0 at Aveley last night thanks to goals from Matt Rush, George Fowler and Matt Bentley.
They’re up to 10th in the table, three points off the play-off places.
