Two goals in as many minutes saw Maidstone knocked out of the Kent Senior Cup at Bromley on Tuesday night.
Stones led through Jack Paxman midway through the second half but substitute Jordan Higgs and a Blair Turgott penalty won it for the hosts.
Both clubs named strong line-ups for the first-round tie, looking to take the competition seriously.
Bromley made the early running in a half of few chances, looking to expose an unfamiliar centre-half pairing of Seth Twumasi, a right-back by trade, and Billy Parkinson, brother of former Stones ace Jack.
Twumasi, a former England under-20 international, started his career at Chelsea and last season played in League 2 for Newport.
It was a mismatch up against giant Bromley forward Adam Cunnington but the new man was certainly game, while Parkinson - who’s left Chatham - blocked smartly from Bradley Goldberg.
Stones’ other debutant, midfielder Charlie Harris, looked bright on the ball and went close to the opening goal, a bullet header from Ben Greenhalgh’s cross well saved by Alan Julian.
Maidstone lost Jack Evans to injury after an hour, leaving the field with stud marks down his shin, meaning a debut for academy player Josh Dorling.
Stones went close again midway through the second half, Greenhalgh with a lovely bit of skill to create the opening only for Julian pushing the ball wide.
Maidstone took the lead from the corner, Greenhalgh playing a one-two with Tom Murphy before Paxman skipped a challenge and sidefooted the ball into the far corner from a tight angle on 69 minutes.
Two goals in as many minutes turned the tie Bromley’s way.
On 77 minutes, Twumasi tried to cut out a cross but the ball dropped to substitute Higgs, who finished from eight yards.
Then, on 79 minutes, Twumasi conceded a harsh penalty, with Turgott beating Lee Worgan.
