BOYS training at Maidstone's Mote Park were delighted when they spotted players from Nationwide League side Sheffield United being put through their paces a few yards away.

But their delight turned to huge disappointment when the players allegedly handed out sarcasm and abuse rather than autographs.

Chris Brennan, the Wateringbury under-16s manager, said his youngsters were upset by the professional players who, he insisted, told them in crude terms how bad they were.

"They all ran up to us in a big group and fell on their knees in mock worship," he said.

He added that they made critical comments about the boys' ability. Mr Brennan said he had sent a message of protest to Sheffield United manager Neil Warnock, but had received no reply.

The allged incident occurred two weeks ago. The Sheffield United players were training before a fixture against Gillingham later that afternoon and had been staying in a nearby hotel.

Mr Brennan said Warnock was not with the players who were accompanied by several coaches. He stressed: "It's such a shame. The lads were really impressed to see the players but they just got the mickey taken out of them."

Nobody at Sheffield United was available to comment on the claims.
