There was only one club for Delano Sam-Yorke after his Woking contract expired - Maidstone.
Sam-Yorke rediscovered his form during a two-month loan spell at the Gallagher last season, becoming a huge favourite with fans who gave him a standing ovation in his final match.
He risked the wrath of Woking by admitting he wanted to stay at United but with the clubs locked in a relegation battle, there was no chance Cards boss Garry Hill would allow that.
Maidstone tested the water but Woking said no and Sam-Yorke duly scored against them at the end of March, a game Jay Saunders’ side won 4-2.
United went back in for him in the summer, signing the striker on a one-year deal.
Sam-Yorke said: “I really wanted to get sorted as soon as possible and it was no secret that I enjoyed my time here.
“As soon as I got the call from Jay, I met up with him and the chairman and we were good to go. I’m delighted to be back.
“Coming here on loan helped my form and getting the hunger back for the game.
“I called Garry and asked him if I could stay at Maidstone and extend my loan but he wasn’t going for it so I had to go back.
“I still enjoyed going back and seeing all the boys and I had a job to do. Wherever I am, I’ll always put in 100%.”
Sam-Yorke was in an unenviable position lining up against Maidstone but he remained professional, scoring Woking’s opener.
He said: “The Maidstone boys added me back on the group chat the night before the game and were hammering me!
“As soon as I scored I knew my job was done. Out of respect I didn’t celebrate too much.
“I knew the boys here would have caned me if I’d celebrated so I just kept it quiet and walked off.”
