Max Ehmer was glad to be back playing for the Gills on Tuesday but not happy with the goals they conceded.
Both of Birmingham's goals originated from set-pieces and German defender Ehmer knows the defending has to be better.
He said: “We are very disappointed with the two sloppy goals we conceded.
"In our overall play we didn’t play as well as we could have but we go again on Saturday against Peterborough.
“Birmingham are doing really well in the Championship and it was always going to be hard but before the game we felt we could get something. We couldn’t in the end.”
It was Ehmer's first appearance since making a summer move to the Gills from QPR.
It was Gillingham's first loss of the season.
Ehmer said: “I thought I did all right but you are always disappointed when you lose and you feel you can do better. That’s football.
“With the form we are in and the results that we are picking up we felt we can go to most places and get a result but it’s not to be and we look forward to the league now on Saturday.
“We started brightly but got a bit sloppy 20 minutes in. We picked up again second half but the damage was done when the second goal went in.
“Championship clubs know how to kill the game and keep the ball and that killed us.”
