Joe Ellul believes Maidstone have a stronger squad than last season.
The Stones have lost the likes of George Porter, Scott Rendell, who joined Havant this week, and Kreshnic Krasniqi.
But they’ve recruited well with signings including Alfie Pavey, Roarie Deacon and Michael Phillips.
Big defender Ellul was one of United’s best players in the curtailed 2020/21 campaign.
And, after signing a new deal, he’s been impressed with the calibre of players manager Hakan Hayrettin has brought to the Gallagher Stadium.
“I wasn’t too sure who would be staying or going, or who would be coming in but you can see the quality we’ve got,” said Ellul.
“I don’t really like to compare squads but from being around the boys you can feel the difference.
“We’ve got lots of quality, competition for places and there’s a good attitude towards everything we’re doing, so overall I’d say it probably is a stronger squad than last season.”
Hayrettin made it clear to Ellul he wanted him to sign a new contract and it was an easy decision for the ex-Maidenhead man, who formed a good partnership with George Elokobi.
“It was there in principle to stay,” said Ellul.
“We had a chat when last season ended and it was just a case of getting back down to get it done.
“I had a good connection with George at the back. I think we’re both born leaders and that helped the younger boys.
“At the same time it was a weird season with Covid and I don’t think anyone really got into the full swing of things to show what they had, so it’s a case of unfinished business.
“I like the club, it’s a massive club and I want to get the club back up.”
Ellul is also looking forward to playing in front of the Gallagher crowd for the first time.
He met fans at an open training session on Saturday and can’t wait to get going.
“It will be nice to have the fans back in cheering us on,” said Ellul.
“There were times last season when we were drawing or losing when the crowd would have pushed us on.
“It was nice to meet some of the fans and see people in the ground at the weekend. It’s been a long time.”
Maidstone start their pre-season campaign at neighbours Bearsted on Saturday (3pm) and host Sheppey on Tuesday (7.45pm).
