George Elokobi says his new contract has provided clarity as Maidstone start planning for next season.

The Stones don’t know what division they will be in yet, with Elokobi’s side challenging for promotion.

But whether they clinch an immediate return to the National League or spend another season in National League South, Elokobi’s two-year contract extension puts them in a strong position.

It means they can start talking to members of the existing squad while considering summer targets with confidence.

“We are trying to build for next season in National League South but also have that eye on the National League, if it does happen,” said Elokobi.

“The new contract is to make sure I’m here to carry on building what we started and trying to look at the season that’s coming and where we want to strengthen.

“The players we think we need to try and keep at the football club, we can start talking to them and ensuring we put things in front of them and their representatives.

“If they like what they’ve experienced this season, why not commit and build again from that?

“Clarity is a big thing in football and, yes, they know who’s going to be at the helm next season. Uncertainty is not a good thing at any football club or any organisation.

“That deal had been on the table for months but I didn’t want to take anything away from the FA Cup run and what the boys were doing because that was their show.

“But it was important that, after the FA Cup, I got the deal signed so everyone knows I’m here and I’m not going to be jumping ship, which was never the case.”

Elokobi has been tipped to go far in management, even more so after leading Maidstone to the last 16 of the Cup.

While he’s ambitious to work at higher levels, that can wait.

“You can’t shy away from rumours or speculation - it’s always going to happen if you’re doing well as a manager,” said Elokobi.

“It’s flattering but we have a job to do here and we are very focused on that job.

“We don’t run ahead of ourselves. I never did in my playing days and I won’t as a young manager. You know how this job is, one minute it’s all sweet, the next not so sweet.”

Maidstone host Weston in National League South on Saturday (3pm).
