Maidstone United sign defender Mamadou Jobe on loan from League 1 club Cambridge United; Stones host Aldershot in the National League tonight

Caretaker boss George Elokobi has promised to look after new loan signing Mamadou Jobe as Maidstone prepare for another big game.

Central defender Jobe has joined the Stones on loan from League 1 club Cambridge, having made his debut for the U’s in the EFL Trophy last season.

He was an unused substitute against Wrexham on Saturday, with Elokobi reluctant to throw the 19-year-old straight into the side.

He’s set to be in the squad again tonight when United take on Aldershot at the Gallagher Stadium (7.45pm) and, having had a few days to settle in, he has more chance of playing a part.

Elokobi said: “He’s a player that we’ve watched, that our scouting team has watched a lot of times, that is going to come in and try and help us out.

"He was in the squad on Saturday to get a good feel of what the team is all about but I didn’t want to throw him straight in at the deep end.

"He needs to get used to the environment and how we play but he’s got fantastic attributes and hopefully, soon, we’ll see what he’s all about when he’s given that opportunity to showcase his talents with us.

"He’s a great lad and we’re going to look after him because he’s young and we’ve already started doing that.

"The boys have made him feel welcome and I can only try and help him, along with our coaching staff.”

Maidstone won 3-1 at the Rec in August as Aldershot made a slow start to the season.

However, there's been a reversal in fortunes, with the Shots pulling eight points clear of the relegation zone while Maidstone are second-bottom after seven straight losses.

The Stones, though, go into the game buoyed by a stirring display against title-chasing Wrexham at the weekend in Elokobi’s first league game in charge.

Elokobi, speaking after the 3-2 defeat on Saturday, said: “I’ve said to the players and staff, as soon as everyone leaves this game, they should be proud of themselves.

“We worry about what we didn’t do right. That’s our job as staff. Let us worry about that side of things.

“The players gave their all. We’ve got another game coming up very, very fast, so we have to switch their mindset to being positive, seeing how well they did in this game but also to make sure we prepare fully for Aldershot because it’s going to to be a very stern test.

“Aldershot have got a good team and we’re beginning to show what we can do.

“Hopefully it’s another entertaining game and a positive one for us.”

Elokobi was in the Aldershot team when the sides last met at the Gallagher Stadium, a 2-0 win for the visitors on the final day of the 2018/19 National League season.
