George Elokobi says Maidstone’s victory at Worthing was their best performance of the season - by far.

The Stones won 2-0 at Woodside Road in National League South on Saturday thanks to goals from Charlie Seaman and skipper Sam Corne.

They blunted the Rebels’ passing game while causing plenty of problems of their own to inflict a first home defeat and move above their opponents into 15th place.

“That was our best performance of the season - by far,” said Stones boss Elokobi, after his side extended their unbeaten run to five matches in league and cup.

“In possession, out of possession, the decision-making and also the team structure within the units, it was a really great performance.”

Maidstone lost 5-1 in the league and 2-1 in the play-off semi-finals on their two trips to Worthing last season.

They worked hard on a game plan to turn things their way this time - and the players delivered.

“The most important thing is the psychological capacity that we loaded the players with, to concentrate for the full 90 minutes and not switch off,” said Elokobi.

“They had to use their voices to communicate with one another and they needed to do a job-and-a-half, not just marking their player but to be aware of the spaces and the runners, with the way Worthing play.

“Mo Faal (ex-Stones striker), we’ve nullified him.

“In our analysis, we told the boys he was going to be dropping short and then you’ve got two No.10s running into the space.

“It’s about making sure that information is given to the players and we’ve looked at visuals and worked on practicals in our preparation.

“We knew at some stage, yes, they would have a spell on the ball, but we didn’t need to panic, we just needed to force them into areas they didn’t want to go and deny them those central spaces they like to play in.

“We’ve played a different system because we know we’ve got the personnel that can do it, and it’s about making sure we give the opposition a problem to solve and not just come here to solve their problems.

“It’s about having a game plan and a strategy and the boys have executed the perfect game plan in our opinion as a management team.

“When you come to a good side like Worthing and get a perfect result in terms of a 2-0 victory and a clean sheet, it’s all credit to the players and I’m so delighted for them.”

Elokobi was particularly impressed with former Blackpool midfielder Tayt Trusty, who impressed coming into the side for the injured Jordan Higgs.

It was his pass that led to Seaman’s opener and he followed instructions in the middle of the park.

“Tayt’s got that vision, he’s got the technical abilities to unlock defensive lines,” said Elokobi.

“He can play short passes but also passes over the top and around the corner as well.

“He has the game intelligence to be able to read situations, land on first phases and compete aerially but also the composure on regains to find the next pass and make sure we find a Maidstone shirt.

“He’s still work in progress, he’s improving and developing under our structure but I’m delighted he got the minutes he did.

“We’ll carry on working with him but let’s not forget the experienced heads around him, the likes of Sam Corne, Temi Ewewka, Reiss Greenidge, Charlie Seaman, George Fowler, Ben Brookes - they all helped him, but it was good to see him put in the performance he did.”
