Maidstone United striker Elliott Romain ready to add goals to his work rate

It’s surely a matter of time before Elliott Romain’s phenomenal work rate is rewarded with more goals.

Romain had four good chances in Maidstone’s FA Trophy replay win over Woking on Tuesday night.

He saw a shot spilled in the opening seconds, dragged another effort wide in the first half and was denied by two good saves at the end of extra time.

His non-stop running and hassling and harrying of defenders make him a huge asset up front and fans would love to see him add to his solitary Stones goal, the debut strike against Leyton Orient in the FA Cup.

He said: “That’s probably the most chances I’ve had in a game since I’ve been at the club.

"It would have been nice to score but the main thing is we went through. I’m sure the goals will come.”

Manager Harry Wheeler hailed Romain as the hardest-working striker in the National League after signing him from Dagenham and he will always guarantee you a shift.

Romain said: “It’s just natural fitness. I’ve always been that type of player. It’s not something I’ve worked on.

"If my name’s mentioned, people always say the same thing and talk about my work rate.”

Romain need look no further than his old club Dagenham to see what’s possible as Maidstone look to climb out of the National League drop zone.

The Daggers struggled in the first few months of the season but six wins in eight games have lifted Peter Taylor’s side up to 14th.

United are out to start their own run at home to play-off contenders Gateshead this Saturday, buoyed by their FA Trophy progress.

Romain said: “You look at Dagenham and if you string a few wins together you can soon be halfway up the league.

"That’s what we’ve got to look to do. You just have to stick together as a team and listen to the gaffer.

"We’ve got a good squad in there, it’s settling down now and I think we’re ready to kick on.

"The gaffer told us to relax before the Woking game and said there was no pressure on us and it made a difference.

"Hopefully that win will help us kick on in the league.

"We’ve had some bad luck and things have gone against us but we need to start winning and Gateshead is a big game. We need the fans to stick with us."
