Maidstone boss Hakan Hayrettin’s frustration at conceding a late equaliser didn’t take away from the bigger picture.

Hayrettin saw a vast improvement on United’s 4-1 defeat at Gateshead in last night’s 1-1 National League draw with Wealdstone.

Sam Corne’s 80th-minute goal was cancelled out by Jack Cook in the final minute of normal time at the Gallagher.

And while the manner of the leveller got to Hayrettin, he was pleased to put the Gateshead debacle to bed.

“I’m much happier than what we saw at Gateshead,” said Hayrettin, whose side sit 12th in the table on 11 points.

“We needed to show a massive improvement for the guys that went up there and we did.

“I think we were good value tonight and we should have won.

“When you go 1-0 up with 10 minutes to go you should see the game out.

“It was bad organisation from us, a long throw, we usually mark in front, we didn’t, the fella turned and shoots, goal. I’m not happy about that but overall very happy.”

The move for Wealdstone’s goal came after substitute Josh Fawole came inside and lost possession.

It’s not a mistake the forward will make again in a hurry, with his place in the side at stake.

Hayrettin added: “I said to Josh, ‘If you ever come inside again and lose the ball you’ll never play for me’ because I don’t play like that.

“I like people to express themselves, especially at home, we’re 1-0 up, you’ve got pace, take the ball forward, why have you got to come inside for? And that’s what cost us.

“It wasn’t because they were better than us, it was our organisation and that’s why we dropped two points, simple.

“Listen, I’m ecstatic with the performance because it’s a massive improvement on Gateshead, against a team that went to Gateshead and won.

"We should have won but overall it’s a step in the right direction and I’m happy.”

New loan signing Ryan Galvin enjoyed an impressive debut after joining from Sheffield Wednesday.

The 21-year-old got up and down well from left-back, delivering some fine crosses.

Hayrettin drew on his friendship with Owls boss Darren Moore to make the deal happen.

He said: “I played with Darren Moore at two clubs, I played with him at Torquay and at Doncaster.

“We speak regularly and I spoke to him and I said what have you got and he said he had a left-back from London.

“He’s played in the first team there, he’s played wing-back, he’s played as a third centre-back, he’s played left-back.

“He showed me the clips and I just got it done.

“Ryan’s got plenty of enthusiasm, he’s young, he’s fit, he’s quick and he’ll get better.”

It’s the second time Moore has helped Maidstone in the past few years, also sending striker Max Watters their way while in charge at Doncaster.

“I used to tell him how to kick a ball,” said Hayrettin.

“He’s a great pal of mine, a big character, always there.

“The thing is when Ryan came in he goes, ‘That’s exactly what we do at Sheffield Wednesday’.

“So it’s the same terminology that we use and the same methods that we use, just a different bloke doing it.”
