Ditton's Barry Hawkins lost out in the second round of the World Championships in what proved to be a record-breaking clash at the Crucible Theatre.

Hawkins was beaten by world No.8 Kyren Wilson 13-11 in a match that saw nine centuries – a record for a best-of-25 clash at the Crucible – but leaves Sheffield wondering what might have been after missing a golden opportunity to make a 147 maximum break worth £50,000.

The world No.9 missed an easy-looking 14th black when poised to go all the way in frame two but did not dwell on the miss, scoring four centuries in the first session to take a 6-1 lead.

However the Warrior showed plenty of tenacity to cut the Hawk's advantage, winning eight of the next 11 frames to level at 9-9. Hawkins won two of the next three to lead 11-10, but the 27-year-old from Kettering rattled off breaks of 125 and 132 to book his place in the last eight.

"The session last night (Sunday) cost me," reflected Hawkins. "The way I started felt great and then it disappeared.

"The match sums up my season. Up one minute and down the next. He came out all guns blazing and I didn't make the most of my opportunities like he did.

"I'm happy it's (the season) over now. Obviously disappointed to lose but happy to put my cue away and enjoy my 40th birthday – belated celebrations and (I'll) go mental for a few weeks!"
