Joe Healy saw red as 10-man Welling suffered an eighth successive defeat in Vanarama Conference on Sunday.
Healy was given a straight red card by referee Nicholas Kinseley after a two-footed lunge on James Lawrie early in the second half.
The visitors dominated thereafter and claimed their victory with 14 minutes left through substitute Ryan Crowther.
Both sides had chances in an even first half as Loui Fazakerley took caretaker charge of the Wings for the first time.
Dominic Vose set-up Jason Williams as early as the fourth minute but the on-loan Southend striker was denied by keeper Stuart Coburn.
Vose delivered a free-kick over the bar, the returning Rod Young shot straight at Coburn and Vose was also denied by the veteran stopper.
At the other end, Jordan Sinnott’s effort was beaten away by Jon Henly, who then denied Kyle Perry while Lawrie shot wide when well placed.
The game changed nine minutes into the second half when Healy left referee Kinseley little option but to show the red card, although the official surprisingly failed to take action against the two Altrincham players who appeared to barge into him as they demanded action be taken against Healy.
Despite dominating possession and Welling continuing to defend deep and in numbers, Altrincham had only a head wide of the target by Damien Reeves to show for their efforts until Crowther fired home from 20 yards past Henly at the near post just seven minutes after coming on.
Welling rallied late on and substitute Aristide Bassele’s header was saved but they lacked the confidence needed to threaten with their numerical disadvantage and now face three difficult matches away from home against Gateshead, Lincoln and Barnet.
