Platt’s Heath’s Jake Hill claimed his first British Touring Car Championship wins of the season at the weekend with a double victory at Oulton Park.
Laser Tools Racing with MB Motorsport driver Hill, who finished third in the championship last season, had yet to climb the top step of the podium in 2023 but put that right in style with wins in races one and two.
His West Surrey Racing team-mate Colin Turkington completed a clean sweep in race three. Hill, though, was right behind him and set three fastest laps.
“It’s been a blinder of a race weekend,” Hill said. “To take two wins, three podiums and three fastest laps is brilliant and I can’t say much more than that.
“This car and the team are true heroes, and we have really turned it around this weekend.
“The car was monstrous - I am not saying that it is going to be rapid everywhere, but it is currently a lovely place to be. I must say a huge thank-you to Laser Tools Racing with MB Motorsport, everyone in the team at West Surrey Racing and of course BMW UK for all of their support.”
A brilliant start from Hill saw his BMW 330e M Sport blast past polesitter and championship leader Ash Sutton of Wrotham-based Motorbase Performance NAPA UK Racing around the outside on the run down to turn one, and a robust defence followed on the opening laps as the rear-wheel drive car gradually brought its tyres up to temperature.
After a high-pressured start Hill then gradually settled into his stride and pulled away from Sutton, Bristol Street Motors with EXCELR8’s Tom Ingram finishing third.
Hill then claimed his first-ever BTCC double on the same weekend with a lights-to-flag success in the second bout at the picturesque Cheshire venue.
In truth, he was never troubled - despite an early safety car period - and eventually pulled clear to secure another win ahead of Sutton with Ingram again third.
Team BMW’s Turkington grabbed victory in the final reverse grid race, completing a phenomenal comeback.
A disqualification from qualifying after his car failed post-session scrutineering checks meant a starting berth on the last row of the grid for the Northern Irishman
Having charged through the order in the first two races to finish ninth and fourth, he saved his best until last to take his second victory of the season. Team BMW’s Adam Morgan completed the podium in third for his 40th in the BTCC.
The moment of truth came shortly after an early safety-car period as Turkington ran around the outside ofMorgan through turn one, while Hill also followed him through when the move was completed down at Cascades.
The aforementioned safety car spell also proved dramatic as Sutton grounded to a halt on the opening lap after contact with Ingram’s car squeezed the former into the pit wall.
BMW’s memorable day helped the Bavarian marque claim top spot in the manufacturers’ standings, while NAPA Racing UK maintained their position at the head of the teams’ order.
Sutton’s Motorbase teammate Dan Cammish was fifth, sixth and fifth, while fellow NAPA drivers Dan Rowbottom and Sam Osborne both failed to finish race one, were 21st and 23rd respectively in race two and eighth and 14th in race three.
Sutton leads the standings on 218 points with Hill third on 192. The season resumes at Croft on July 29-30.
