British Touring Car Championship title within Jake Hill's grasp following ROKiT MB Motorsport BMW driver's strong showing in penultimate round at Silverstone

Platts Heath's Jake Hill will go into the final round of this season's British Touring Car Championship with a shot at the title after a win and a second place at Silverstone last weekend.

ROKiT MB Motorsport BMW racer Hill is just five points behind Wrotham-based Motorbase Performance's NAPA Racing pilot Ash Sutton after his two podium places - as well as a fourth - and can secure his first BTCC crown at his home circuit of Brands Hatch in two weeks' time.

Hill's victory in race two featured a spectacular outbreaking manoeuvre on Rory Butcher going into Copse Corner and, despite the introduction of the safety car, he quickly regained his rhythm after the field closed up to pull away from danger and win in style.

“What a weekend! To come away five points behind the championship lead is just incredible," Hill said.

"The ROKiT MB Motorsport and West Surrey Racing team have been outstanding yet again. The car was faultless, and to have my engineer Craig [Porley, who is recovering from pneumonia] still doing everything he could from his hospital bed was brilliant.

"I'm so excited to get to my home race at Brands Hatch where we will be giving it our all to get this title!"

The omens for the weekend looked good when Hill secured his sixth front-row start - just 0.037sec off Toyota's Butcher - to sit 15 points clear in the Goodyear Wingfoot Award standings for the fastest qualifier.

He kept his second place despite poor tyre temperature in the early laps and once optimal began reeling the leader in. He was fastest man on track until a safety car was deployed and crossed the finish line just two tenths behind winner Butcher.

Starting race two in second place, Hill found himself down in fourth but overtakes on Sutton, Honda's Gordon Shedden and then Butcher, whom he passed at Luffield and outbreaked into Copse, set up a deserved win - his third of the season.

Drawn in eighth place for the final race of the day, Hill dropped back to 11th after heavy contact into Brooklands but somehow caught the resulting slide.

A fight through the pack followed, with some of his most decisive overtakes this season. Hill sliced past Ollie Jackson's Ford Focus ST at Copse, the Hyundai of Tom Chilton at Brooklands and then repeated his move from earlier at Luffield - this time on Honda's Josh Cook - before outdragging the NAPA Racing Ford Focus ST of Dan Cammish for fourth place. Hyundai's Tom Ingram won the race.

During his charge, Hill not only set the fastest lap - his fifth of the season - but broke the BTCC lap record and scored an all-important extra point.

Motorbase driver and defending BTCC champion Sutton remains the man to beat, though, despite a winless weekend. Sutton was sixth in race one, fourth in race two and second in race three.

He said: “It’s like it’s been scripted all year hasn’t it, let’s be honest. Brands is our home circuit for the team and we’ve had a mega weekend here, so I’m looking forward to Brands.

"We’re in a really good place with the car, the second half of the season I’ve felt at one with it. We’ve been able to dial it in, tweak it, chip away at it and it’s got us into the championship lead.

"I couldn’t have asked for any more going into the final round.”

Broadstairs' Michael Crees had to settle for a best finish of 16th - sixth in the Independents Trophy - in the first of Silverstone’s three contests.

Ending race two seventh in class and 19th overall, the CarStore Power Maxed Racing Astra driver rounded off his weekend seventh in class and 20th overall.

The final round of the season is at Brands Hatch on October 8-9.
