Zavon Hines played through illness to score his first Maidstone goals.
Hines had been unwell since the weekend but lined up at Tonbridge last night and scored both goals in a 2-1 Kent Senior Cup victory.
The former West Ham man put United in front after the ball dropped in the box and sent keeper Jonny Henly the wrong way from the penalty spot for his second.
He went close to a hat-trick, hitting the bar from the edge of the box after a fine run.
Stones boss Jay Saunders said: "He took his penalty well and the first one showed a bit of composure.
"Tonight you could see glimpses of what he's capable of I think there's more to come from him but it was important he got some minutes under his belt.
"He informed us before the game he's been ill since Sunday but wanted to play, so it's good he's got a good workout.
"He'll get better but you could see what he's capable of and I was pleased with his workrate and his tracking back."
Joe Pigott also hit the woodwork for United while Henly made a flying save from Harley Willard.
Ryman League Tonbridge replied with a second-half header from Nathan Elder and saw Chris Kinnear's quick free-kick crash back off the bar.
Angels more than played their part, Joe Turner bringing out the best in Stones academy keeper Tommy Taylor, who also saved well from Elder.
Saunders, who made several changes, said: "I don't think we were particularly great and I thought Tonbridge had a very good game.
"They had a real go at us and you'd expect nothing less of a Steve McKimm and Barry Moore side.
"It's proved a worthwhile exercise because if you have a friendly you don't really get a lot out of it, where I suppose with this, it's more realistic.
"People needed minutes and thankfully we've come through injury-free, which is the main thing."
