Kent Olympic star Ashley Jackson was on the scoresheet as Great Britain's men upset the form-book in their opening game of the hockey competition in Beijing on Monday morning.

The 20-year-old from Kings Hill, West Malling - the youngest member of the 16-man squad at the Games - netted the third goal in GB's 4-2 win over Pakistan at the Olympic Green Hockey Stadium.

The victory was the first for GB over Pakistan at the Olympics since 1952.

The former Sutton Valence pupil's goal came before the break and gave his side a comfortable lead, but Pakistan hit back with two second-half strikes before a late British fourth banished any threat of a comeback.

GB face another stern test against the Netherlands at 2pm BST on Wednesday and will also have to play reigning champions Australia in their pool as they bid to secure a place in the semi-finals.

Head coach Jason Lee said: "It was a brilliant start."
