Maidstone boss Jay Saunders wants his players to tell him if they’re too tired to face Wrexham.
It’s been a tough week for the Stones after long trips to Gateshead and Macclesfield and they complete their 1,700-mile tour of Britain at the Racecourse Ground tomorrow (Good Friday).
United arrived back from Macclesfield at 4am on Wednesday after losing their nine-game unbeaten record and are back on the road for an overnight stay before taking on Wrexham.
Saunders believes one more win will keep Maidstone in the National League – they’re five points clear of the relegation zone in 16th place – and he doesn’t want to risk tired players at Wrexham.
He said: “I’d have loved to extend our unbeaten run but realistically I knew the journeys were going to be a killer.
“It’s been a tough couple of days. I’m not playing and I feel it so it’s tough for the players.
“We’ve got to assess everyone. It might be a case where a couple of people have to come out.
“I’m going to ask the lads to be honest with me and I’m sure they will be because there’s no point putting lads out there who are too tired.
“I’ll speak to them one by one. I’ll have a little chat with them and see how they feel.
“I can gauge it to be honest, the ones that may be struggling a little bit.”
Midfielder Stuart Lewis could be missing after hobbling off with an ankle injury in the 3-0 defeat at Macclesfield, while George Oakley’s loan spell has finished.
Saunders could boost his squad by recalling Callum Driver from his loan at Hemel Hempstead.
Wrexham, in 12th, have nothing to play for but Saunders feels they are dangerous opponents.
He said: “I just don’t want us to get complacent and think we’re safe.
“We still need one more win, just because of the way the other results have been going.
“Everyone keeps saying to me we’re safe now. Yes, you’d be unlucky to go down with 50 points.
“Normally that would see you safe but I think this year it’s going to be higher.
"This is another difficult game. Wrexham are a team with nothing to play for so they’ve got a lot of freedom and can go out and express themselves.”
