Tom Mills says Maidstone boss Jay Saunders is still one of the boys.
Left-back Mills has barely missed a game in Saunders’ six years in charge.
The manager was handed a new deal last week - and Mills couldn’t be happier.
He said: “He deserves it. There’s been speculation around the ground saying he might go but there was no chance of that.
“Look what he’s done for the club over the years - he’s been fantastic.
“He’s just gone up and up and I think he’ll keep us up this year.
“He’s down to earth as a gaffer. He’s still one of the boys, he’s not one of those gaffers who’s maybe a bit older and stricter with you.
“That works well in the dressing room. If you can be like that with all the lads and get on with everyone, I think that’s the way to be.”
Mills and Saunders have won three promotions and a League Cup together.
The Stones defender added: “Over the years he’s got the experience and he’s pushed on and won leagues and stuff but as a person he’s great to work with.
“He’s got his experience but he’s still a young manager and he’s probably still got a lot to learn but he’s done really well so far.
“The boys sort of sensed the new contract was coming.
“Everyone thought if he’s going to get a new deal it would be around this time.”
