Jay Saunders described Maidstone's late defeat at Aldershot as a kick in the teeth.
A big defensive effort against an impressive Shots side looked set to be rewarded with a point on Tuesday night.
But they missed out in the 88th minute when a mistake by Bobby-Joe Taylor - filling in at right-back after Callum Driver went off injured - was punished by Bernard Mensah.
Boss Saunders said: "I thought Aldershot were very good but when you defend like that for probably 89 minutes it's a kick in the teeth to be honest.
"But there you go, I've just said to the boys in there, we'll move on and that's football.
"I'm not saying we were brilliant tonight, I think we're still finding our feet at this level, but I thought we had some very good chances.
"When you look at Tom Murphy going through one-on-one he's got to score, second half he's had one he's got to bring down, should score. There were others as well.
"When you look at that you think maybe on another day you nick something but, as I say, Aldershot were very good, they caused a lot of problems, especially early on.
"I thought once we got to grips with them a little bit and we changed things slightly we came into it a bit more but we didn't control the game for long enough spells and, to be fair, it's just disappointing that the goal has come from our mistake.
"Jack Paxman really could have played forward - he doesn't really need to set Bobby - and then Bobby's tried turning blind, got tackled, it's taken a nice deflection for the lad and he's finished it well."
Driver left the Rec on crutches but Saunders is hoping it's more of an impact injury.
He added: "I thought Callum was having a very good game.
"They've got some dangerous wingers here and I thought he was dealing with them well.
"It's a blow for us but hopefully he'll be OK. I think it's just more of a kick in the tackle.
"Bob slotted in and did well. Unfortunately for him, one little mistake and he's been punished."
