Maidstone could not take advantage of being involved in one of just four games in Ryman League Premier Division to take place on Saturday as they were pegged back from 2-0 up at 10-man Leiston to draw 2-2.
Second-placed Margate’s big game against Hendon was postponed, while third-placed Dulwich Hamlet drew 0-0 against Met Police to go joint-second, however Stones' point could only extend their advantage at the top to five points, with Gate now having a game in hand.
Craig Stone headed an early chance over from a Frannie Collin free-kick while at the other end Lee Worgan did well to keep out a shot from John Sands, who was shown a red card moments later after kicking out in frustration at Sonny Miles just 14 minutes into his debut, after joining on loan from Canvey Island.
Gareth Heath fired wide of Worgan’s post, and Billy Bricknell and Frannie Collin were thwarted at the other end before Heath tested Worgan.
The deadlock was broken shortly after the half hour when Jay May latched onto a fine pass from Stone and volleyed the opener past keeper Danny Gay.
Miles and Bricknell went close to a second before May did double the lead seconds before the break when a Collin corner caused a scramble and May turned the ball home.
The Stones were reduced to 10 themselves four minutes after the interval as Steve Watt brought down Joe Francis, and though Miles went close to sealing the points, it was Francis who halved the deficit 15 minutes from time.
The hosts piled on the pressure in the closing stages and Blake Saker struck during the four minutes of second-half stoppage time to snatch a point.
